Overwintered Bhut Jolokia

Overwintered Bhut Jolokia

I was able to overwinter several plants this past winter including my first Bhut Jolokia. I obtained the seed from Dr. Bosland at the Chili Pepper Institute. The plant looks a bit worse for wear but in the past few days has shown signs of new growth. One of the putative problems with overwintering is salt build-up in the soil. As I live in the MidWest and this past winter was particularly cold coupled with inexperience, I did not leach the soil regularly to flush the salts from the fertilizer out of the soil thus creating a saline soil. Once the weather broke I leached the soils and applied lime and fertilizer and so far everything appears right as rain. When we are past the last threat of frost I will transplant it.
